Purpose and goal
The goal of the project was to develop a complete functional measurement phantom for SRS treatment, external radiation therapy of the brain, which measures three dimensionally with high accuracy and minimal dependence on the incidence of the treatment angle. The goal was a fully functional prototype, which was not really achieved within the framework of the project, but probably soon after the completion of project.
Expected results and effects
Technology for measuring radiation dose during SRS treatment in three dimensions with high accuracy has been developed and a (almost completed) prototype will fully demonstrate this. The effect of the product will be that cancer-hospitals can verify advanced treatments within SRS and thus enable many more hospitals to be confident in using the technology that already exists today for SRS treatment. The measurement system will also enable the verification of new treatment techniques so that these can be used more quickly to cure cancer patients.
Planned approach and implementation
We knew from the start that the new detector configuration would be demanding to implement and therefore the project has been run as partly a development project of electronics, mechanics and partly a feasibility study of the detector unit itself. The preliminary study work took much longer than we expected, but we don´t see that we could have carried it out in a different way. This as we did not know which technology could work for the manufacture of the detector cards. The result will be a profitable product that will help radiation therapy hospitals to implement better and safer treatments.
