Coordinator Jernkontoret
Funding from Vinnova SEK 3 372 829
Project duration November 2019 - December 2020
Status Completed
Venture The strategic innovation programme for Metallic material

Important results from the project

The aim of the project was to show that it is feasible to design, construct and produce attractive and complex shapes from sheet metal in the proposed new way, i.e. with bending as the only shaping operation. The project´s purpose and goals to show the potential for industrial origami was clearly demonstrated through the demonstrators. Knowledge gaps and R&D needs have been mapped to facilitate the path to industrialization. The project has also had a major international impact in the form of pressure and attention.

Expected long term effects

The project explored the possibilities with a new way of designing and constructing with sheet steel as a raw material. Conditions for competitive digital value chains around steel have been created as a result of the project. The attractiveness of working with metals has increased through the communication of demonstrators and the innovation process. R&D issues for industrialization have been identified and further research on the development and application of the technology is planned. Further research can be expected to contribute to the industrialization of technology.

Approach and implementation

The project has been conducted by actors in the entire value chain from steel and metal producers, technical consultants, industrial designers and marketers as well as mechanical workshops. The project approach has focused on practical design and production of demonstrators as well as communication of the innovation process in which limitations and possibilities were explored. The project methodology was a combination of pulse meetings on a weekly basis and a round table principle where all project participants in each work package were present, which worked well.
