Status | Ongoing |
Purpose and goal
The goal of the project is to give Sweden its first realization of the kilogram in accordance with the revised SI system that was put into use on May 20, 2019. The Kibble balance will tie the kilogram to Planck´s constant. A development towards primary realizations, in line with the definitions of the revised SI system, is a central part of the work of the NMI.
Expected effects and result
The most important result of the project will be the access to a primary realization of the mass unit in Sweden. The effect of such a result is twofold. Firstly, it will ensure a continued capacity to serve the industry with accurate calibrations and metrological traceability. Secondly, it will give an opportunity to take part in the international work of disseminating the new kilogram and to conduct metrological research related to mass.
Planned approach and implementation
The project is divided into two parts. The first 1.5 years will be focused on building a Kibble balance together with National Physical Laboratory (NPL) in London, since NPL has a unique competence in the area. After rigorous performance testing, a copy will be built at RISE. The final 1.5 years will focus on RISE´s Kibble balance with the aim to reach optimal performance.
