Innovation by application of process integration on metallurgical processes

Reference number
Coordinator SWEREA MEFOS AB
Funding from Vinnova SEK 496 197
Project duration December 2014 - May 2015
Status Completed
Venture Strategic innovation programme for process industrial IT and automation – PiiA
Call Strategiska innovationsprogrammet PiiA - hösten 2014

Important results from the project

Modell inventory at MEFOS Two workshops where industry challenges have been discussed and documented. Two project areas have been explored including stat-of-art analysis. One of the project areas was developed into a project application for the 8th of April PiiA call. A project consortium consisting of a full value chain. For the second project area a coordination with another PiiA financed prestudy (BOP-GV) has been performed and discussions are ongoing outside the PiMet prestudy on how to proceed.

Expected long term effects

Potential continuation: 2-3% reduction in costs can be achieved through simple adjustments to scrapmix. Additional 2-3%, a total of 4-6% can be saved through changes in purchasing and scrap loading strategy. Savings of 9-15% are possible and probably require import of scrap materials. Höganäs indicates that the process integration applied to steelmanufacturing with full energy focus gives an energy saving of about 8% and a cost optimization provides energy savings of approximately 4.5%. Prevas´ assesses the platform to have a good market potential.

Approach and implementation

Project implementation has been characterized by a broad and open cooperation between all representatives from industry and research. The project manager has distributed homework before the workshops. The homework has then been discussed and analyzed during workshops and these discussions have been documented and are part of the project results. The project has followed the plan in terms of resources and results.

The project description has been provided by the project members themselves and the text has not been looked at by our editors.
