Project duration July 2016 - May 2018
Status Completed
Venture The strategic innovation programme Bioinnovation

Purpose and goal

The project wanted to show that it is possible to replace fossil based materials in healthcare with bio based, and at the same time improve both health- and environmental efficiency. The project was based on five selected ideas from SLL Innovations dealflow. The goal was to commercialize two of the ideas. The project resulted in the founding of two new Medtech-companies based on the project results.

Expected results and effects

The project has shown the importance of connecting idea with execution power and entrepreneurship for commercialization. For the healthcare this is of vital importance in order to gain effect of all potential innovations yet waiting to be developed and commercialized. The project has delivered two new innovations to Swedish healthcare. The project has also inspired SLL Innovation to invite new actors to develop Swedish healthcare. Actors that today do not regard Swedish healthcare as a marked for innovation and investments.

Planned approach and implementation

The project strategy was based on connecting the idea generators with external entrepreneurship. An inventory of 10 potential bio based materials was made by RISE. SLL procurement and SLL Environment have been involved in the work. Södersjukhuset and Södertälje sjukhus have acted as testbeds. Focus groups of doctors and nurses have been put together. Södersjukhuset research centre has tested for bacterial growth. Cooperation agreements have been elaborated in order to regulate rights and obligations between entrepreneur and idea generator.
