Project duration | May 2023 - April 2026 |
Status | Ongoing |
Purpose and goal
InnoTLT will develop the key mass timber product cross-laminated timber (CLT) towards tailored laminated timber (TLT). The concept of TLT includes applications such as walls and floors as well as connections between TLT elements. TLT shall have improved performance in terms of strength, stiffness and thermal insulation. A 20% improvement in comparison with today’s CLT products is foreseen. Concepts include tailoring the orientation of layers, using hardwood species and return wood, and using discontinuous lay-ups.
Expected effects and result
The project will facilitate the future production of TLT-panels without great efforts for the adaption of today’s CLT-production. Economic benefits for stakeholders further down the value chain are also foreseen; architects, builders and end-users can profit from greater flexibility and economic efficiency thanks to integrated functions, improved material efficiency and the use of return wood.
Planned approach and implementation
In a first step, new concepts for TLT panels are proposed to identify where improved performance can be achieved. In a second step, critical assessments of the proposed concepts are carried out and walls, floors and connections are evaluated. In the project, literature studies, workshops with partners from industry, experimental investigations and theoretical modelling work is carried out.
