INCODE Information and Competence on demand

Reference number
Coordinator SICS Swedish ICT Västerås AB
Funding from Vinnova SEK 3 788 000
Project duration August 2015 - April 2017
Status Completed
Venture Strategic innovation programme for process industrial IT and automation – PiiA

Purpose and goal

The project´s goal was to provide concrete results on how AR, VR and Smart Sounds can be used to meet the process industry´s requirements on efficiency, quality, safety and work environment. The three case studies have been the transfer of information using Smart Sounds on a paper mill, how training and preparatory work can be developed using VR technology on a plasterboard production unit, and the consequences of remote service with AR technology in the work environment, knowledge transfer and utilization of expert knowledge.

Expected results and effects

INCODE has developed and tested prototypes in an industrial setting. Information transfer in the control room has been improved the working environment for operators by using new light and audio signals. The change has been verified through surveys. VR environment training enables it to be performed in a safe environment for the operator and equipment. Equipment and operations to be made have been imitated with software used in the gaming industry. For remote service with AR technology, we have identified advantages and challenges through tests in production-like environments.

Planned approach and implementation

The project has been divided into three overlapping stages, which allowed us to adapt activities based on the knowledge we developed in the project. Each stage has ended with a milestone where each work package has had deliveries that correspond to the goals of the stages. The first stage gathered needs which were analyzed and led to suggestions for solutions. Stage two included implementation, integration and testing of the three case solutions. The third and final stages included validation of the results through tests and surveys.
