Purpose and goal
Different aspects for successful implementation of thin film pretreatment were investigated in the project. The evaluation of corrosion resistance for a large number of substrates and paint systems has resulted in increased awareness of thin film for all project parties. Modified corrosion methods have been developed and evaluated, results of which do not give clear answers, but give a complex picture where the results vary with material type, paint system and type of exposure. Evaluation of methods for in-line process monitoring has been done with promising results.
Expected results and effects
The project results have made the project partners better equipped to implement thin film pretreatments: One project partner is constructing a new surface treatment production line based on thin film technology and other project partners who are reviewing the possibilities for thin film with subcontractors. The LCA analysis performed in the project indicates a reduced climate impact of between 19% and 48% when switching to thin film technology, depending on where the plant is situated. The analysis also shows increased productivity by up to 20% due to reduced sludge formation.
Planned approach and implementation
Adjustments in the project´s timetable have been made due to the pandemic, resulting in certain activities was not performed with attendance from as many participants as was originally the plan. Also, other project activities were postponed, resulting in an extension of the project of one calendar year in total. The project has performed trials with analysis equipment at an external surface treatment company, which further confirms the subject´s importance and news value for Swedish industry.
