Improving soil structure in agro-ecosystems: [ImproSoSt]

Purpose and goal

The ImproSoSt project was carried out in the framework of a postdoctoral fellowship. The main aims were i) to gain new scientific insights into interactions between soil structural and physical properties and plant physiological processes and ii) to foster my scientific independence. To achieve these aims, novel experimental set-ups were developed and two master theses were carried out within ImproSoSt under my supervision. Moreover, I could establish new collaborations and strengthen existing ones over the last two years, which will be crucial for my future scientific career.

Expected results and effects

Effects of root water uptake on soil structure formation and interactions between soil physical conditions and root growth were quantified. These experiments resulted in two research papers. In addition, a perspectives paper has been published and I could contribute to several other publications. Working with master students greatly contributed to my skills as a mentor. The (inter-)national collaborations across scientific fields established during the project helped me to increase my professional network, which in turn was crucial to acquire funding for future projects.

Planned approach and implementation

The host institution (Dept. of Soil and Environment) and the host professor (Thomas Keller) gave me a lot of freedom to carry out the scientific work within ImproSoSt. Meanwhile, they provided me with great guidance and support regarding my future career. Throughout the project, I was encouraged to work with master students, to engage in other research projects, and to develop my own research ideas. Ultimately, I was awarded a junior PI grant last year, which gives me the opportunity to pursue an academic career. In summary, ImproSoSt greatly contributed to my scientific independence.
