Identification of high-risk atherosclerotic plaques through new photon-counting spectral CT

Reference number
Coordinator KUNGLIGA TEKNISKA HÖGSKOLAN - KTH Physics of Medical Imaging
Funding from Vinnova SEK 4 350 000
Project duration December 2014 - September 2018
Status Completed

Purpose and goal

The aim of the project was to bring a new technology for computed tomography to clinical realization and we have successfully developed hardware and software which enabled us to examine the first patient in a clinical evaluation.

Expected results and effects

The images show better resolution and contrast with the new photon counting technology compared to the state-of-the-art computed tomography. Our expectation is that the new patented technology will be commercialized and used at hospitals in Sweden and other countries in the future.

Planned approach and implementation

By working with experienced clinicians, we have been able to identify what is crucial for image quality. We have compared the new technology to the present by comparing images of the same patient and we have also used test objects in the comparison.

The project description has been provided by the project members themselves and the text has not been looked at by our editors.
