Important results from the project
The purpose of this activity was to demonstrate the opportunities of higher symmetries for 5G communication systems. We constructed a number of antennas which made use of higher symmetries with different manufacturing techniques: milling, coated and metallic additive manufacturing. We compared the performance of these devices in Ka-band and V-band, which are two of the new bands considered for 5G.
Expected long term effects
After this project, we have validated the concept of higher symmetries for 5G communications. In particular, we have demonstrated that the use of higher symmetries is beneficial for high frequency antenna devices, including leaky-wave antennas and geodesic lenses. Higher symmetries permit to produce cost-effective solutions that could be used for mass-production of microwave devices such as waveguides and filters.
Approach and implementation
The project solely funded KTH. KTH managed the funding. Ericsson AB, Sunway Communications and Digital Metal were contributing in-kind. KTH conducted the research activities. Ericsson AB provided feedback about the needs for base stations and Sunway Communications for terminals. Sunway Communications and Digital Metal contributed with the manufacturing of devices based on additive manufacturing.
