Purpose and goal
We have developed a cooperation project investigating barriers and opportunities for green roof use in Nigeria. We have had an active dialogue with key actors such as urban planners, real estate companies, developers, and NGO:s. We have identified products and services that are relevant for further development of green roof systems for the Nigerian market. We have also developed online course modules aimed at developing the green roof market in Nigeria. This has benefitted both this and our Swedish UDI project.
Expected results and effects
Barriers to green roof use in Nigeria are related to the building structure, increased costs, moisture risks and increasing maintenance costs. Key drivers for implementation are economical as there is a lack of planning regulations. The storm water reducing effect of green roofs is not an important variable in Nigeria. Instead, building cooling, pv anchoring and increased pv efficiency is seen as important. The potential for using local material and native plant material needs to be explored. Online teaching modules developed in our project could be key to building a Nigerian market.
Planned approach and implementation
The project was initially based on web searches on scientific publications, products and business in related fields. This generated a network of contacts that were approached. We had a contact person on site in Nigeria that was working actively with networking activities, meetings and presentations. This was structured in an actor network overview which facilitated our trip to Nigeria where we visited a subset of key actors. The findings were used to identify key factors for success and for the development of an online course module that can be used to build the Nigerian green roof market.
