Purpose and goal

The project´s aim is to reduce carbon emissions from India´s energy-intensive rotary kiln industry by replacing fossil coal with biochar. By combining Swedish research in biochar characterization and sustainability analysis with Indian expertise in kiln technology and AI-based and sensoring process control, the project will develop, demonstrate and validate a scalable solution that enables 25% lower CO₂ emissions and increased industrial sustainability.

Expected effects and result

The project is expected to demonstrate that 30-60% of fossil coal can be replaced with biochar in rotary kiln processes without compromising process stability or product quality. The results include an AI-guided combustion solution, improved energy efficiency and at least 25% reduction in CO₂ emissions. The project will also deliver a validated technology at TRL 7-8, sustainability analyses and a commercialization plan for broad industrial deployment in India and internationally.

Planned approach and implementation

The project will be implemented through close collaboration between Swedish and Indian partners. KTH will characterize biocoal and analyse combustion behaviour. KINC will develop and test a retrofitted rotary kiln for coal–biocoal co-firing. Denvik will develop sensors, data acquisition and AI-based process control. MG Sustainable will coordinate the project and conduct sustainability, life-cycle and business analyses to support commercialization and industrial deployment.
