Status Completed

Purpose and goal

The project’s aims were 1) to develop a new in-situ micro-chemical exploration tool for orogenic gold deposits in Northern Sweden and Ireland; 2) to construct a 4D model of the gold districts based on structural analysis and geochronological dating and 3) to attempt to trace the source of gold and to investigate a possible relationship between the gold deposits and nearby low temperature zinc-lead deposits.

Expected results and effects

The result of the project is that a suite of elements associated with higher gold concentrations was identified, through microanalysis. Knowledge generated is able to be used for geometallurgical purposes and for forecasting possible environmental challenges. A further project could be defined to scale this up to a method that will be useable at an early stage of exploration at other deposits. The 4D model generated will be useful to produce more exploration targets and attract more

Planned approach and implementation

Through the activites in this project we have strengthened the links between academia and industry in Northern Sweden and Ireland. We have demonstrated that there is potential for more gold and lead-zinc discoveries in Northern Sweden. We feel that the collaboration between all project partners (in both industry and academia) went well and the potential for further projects exists in the future. We have continued to make the network broader and larger regarding all stakeholder groups.
