Global indoor positioning in 3D

Reference number
Coordinator COMBAIN MOBILE AB
Funding from Vinnova SEK 1 927 300
Project duration December 2015 - December 2016
Status Completed

Purpose and goal

Since the regular GPS does not work indoors, there is a great need for a new global positioning method. The project´s goal was to create a new unique 3D global positioning systems indoor capable to detect the floor and that works for all wireless products. The project has developed a methodology and algorithms to automatically create 3D models of the radio environment which is stored in a database. These models can then be used for calculation of an indoor position of a mobile unit. A positioning accuracy of less than 10m and correct floor has been reached in the testing system.

Expected results and effects

The project has created the basis for a unique indoor positioning service that provides both floor and much better accuracy than existing services (such as Google). Implementation of the method in production is in progress and will be an improvement of Combain´s existing global positioning service (CPS Combain Positioning System). Relevant IP has been identified and one patent application has been filed and another application being drafted. Scientific papers have been published and presented at IPIN 2016 and CVPR in 2016.

Planned approach and implementation

The project has been implemented by Combain in close cooperation with the Centre for Mathematical Sciences, Lund University. The researchers have been studying new methods, developed the basic algorithms and verified them in Matlab with less amount of data. Combain has implemented and verified algorithms against large amount of data and developed test system and apps. Combain has had an office at Lund University, which has contributed to a focus and close cooperation that gave fast results. Each week project meetings has been held with participants from EIT at LTH and Sony Mobile.
