Reference number
Coordinator Chalmers Tekniska Högskola AB - Institutionen för mikroteknologi och nanovetenskap
Funding from Vinnova SEK 35 000 000
Project duration January 2017 - December 2021
Status Completed
Venture Competence centre

Purpose and goal

The objective of GigaHertz Centre was to develop wireless hardware between Chalmers and companies within businesses crucial to Swedish long-term competitiveness. Our mission was to bring scientific advances originating from the centre faster to industrial exploitation. The three major goals were five concrete cases of industrial impact, 100 scientific publications and eight PhDs. We achieved nine, 69 and eight, respectively.

Expected results and effects

GHz Centre has helped to develop (1) energy efficiency in mm-wave MIMO transmitter 5G systems (2) Linearity in multi-antenna 5G receiver systems (3) knowledge on electro-thermal effects in GaN HEMTs (4) low-noise receivers for scientific instrumentation in space and physics. Ten GHz Centre partners are now using the GHz Centre results in development of new technologies, products, patents as well as for benchmarking and increased know-how including education.

Planned approach and implementation

A research program between Chalmers and the 13 companies has been executed: Efficient and Linear Millimeter Wave Transmitters, Smart Receivers for Future Linear RF Systems, Thermal effects, and Integrated THz Systems. By using a common Steering Board, and an International Scientific Advisory Board, we collaborated with the competence centre ChaseOn in antenna systems which stimulating exchange and synergies, both scientifically and in utilization of results. Centre Days and seminars were arranged together.
