Important results from the project

The aim of this project was to increase the level of understanding and identify areas for improvement for a specific Swedish SME to produce flight certified structural components in composite material. Two central aspects were audits of the existing quality management system as well as the production facilities and processes. Through interviews with key persons at the SME and inspection of the production facilities information was collected and analysed, and the goal of the project fulfilled. The information has been delivered to the SME in the form of a report and a seminar.

Expected long term effects

The results are summarized in a report clarifying the differences between the current praxis at the SME and that which is required to be an approved supplier to the aircraft industry. We expect the SME to follow the stepwise plan in the report at a speed which can be accommodated by the company´s organisation and economy. Certain suggestions can give large improvement for little effort and can be implemented immediately, while other steps, such as completing the audit process for AS9100C certification or upgrading of facilities and equipment is recommended for further in the future.

Approach and implementation

The project has been carried out via interviews with key personal at the SME, as well as a detailed study of standards and production praxis with experts from Saab AB and Swerea SICOMP whom have significant experience from production of certified aircraft structures. The interviews have been conducted via telephone, physical meetings, and an on-site inspection and inventory of the production facilities at the SME by Swerea SICOMP personnel.
