| Call | Shelters of the future - practical prototypes for shelters and protected spaces of tomorrow |
Purpose and goal
Swedish hospitals have long been designed as open, accessible, and welcoming environments. Today, regions lack concrete solutions for designing new healthcare facilities to meet the demands of a changed security situation. The project aims to develop a prototype for a resilient local hospital, focusing on the ground and basement levels, demonstrating in an interactive prototype how they can function effectively in peacetime, crisis, and war.
Expected effects and result
The project will deliver an interactive prototype that allows users to switch between normal operations, heightened preparedness, and wartime conditions to explore changes in building functionality, flows, protected spaces, and healthcare processes. The prototype will be accompanied by recommendations for future healthcare facilities, supporting the translation of national civil defence and healthcare resilience objectives into practical planning solutions.
Planned approach and implementation
The project is led by Carlstedt Arkitekter in collaboration with Locum, representing the client and end-user perspective, disaster medicine specialists from Region Stockholm, structural engineering from Tyréns, and experts in interactive visualization and game development. Requirements and design scenarios will be defined, conflicting objectives identified, and concepts developed for both peacetime and wartime conditions before being transformed into an interactive prototype.
