Important results from the project

The overall goal of the project was to submit a competitive proposal in the field of urban food systems for an grant from Driving Urban Transition (DUT), which was achieved. The grant application was submitted for EU DUT Circular Urban Economies Pathway CUE topic 2: "Knowledge and optimization of resource flows between city and countryside". The overall goal of the main project is to design and create a circular food value chain.

Expected long term effects

The pilot study conducted during the Food Industrial Symbios Workshop helped to identify the needs of stakeholders in urban food systems. During the workshop, the material and non-material resources that each participating organization possesses and needs for food industrial symbiosis were analyzed and discussed. One of the main findings pointed out that Norrbotten has stakeholders who are interested in food industrial symbiosis, however they need knowledge and know-how to think within the framework of food industrial symbiosis and be able to implement it.

Approach and implementation

The workshop was held at Luleå Tekniska Universitet. 15 actors within the food system were represented; Nära Mat, Polarbröd AB, Bottenvikens Bryggeri, Sweden Food Arena, LRF - Lantbrukarnas Riksförbund, Invest in Norrbotten, Luleå municipality, Haparanda Kommun, Älvsbyns Kommun, Boden Business Park, Gällivare Näringsliv AB, Arctic Food Arena, UNIKCAFE LTD, ProcessIT Innovations, LTU Business and Luleå Tekniska Universitet.
