Call Future prototypes for a sustainable forest value chain

Purpose and goal

In our future prototype Forest Value Sense, recycled wood is the norm. With digital product passports the origin and quality of the wood is tracked, increasing trust in recycling. We explore how these passports can take on an emotional dimension: stories about the wood´s journey, from forest to building, bring the material to life. Through speculative design, we create a future where recycled wood carries history, status and inspiration – and where circular choices become self-evident.

Expected effects and result

To meet a future with limited raw material supply and eligibility requirements for sustainable forest management, the view of both virgin and recycled wood products needs to change. Our project explores how shifts in norms among end consumers and actors in the forest value chain can affect this. Med Causal Layered Analysis makes needs, drivers and narratives visible. By “unpacking” mental models, we hope that prototype and process change the conversation about a desirable future.

Planned approach and implementation

The project includes four steps: Stage 1) Explore the current situation through actor workshops and shared understanding of future scenarios. Stage 2) Understand the future through trend scouting, norm analysis and future personas according to Causal Layered Analysis. Stage 3) Create the future through design sprints and prototype development with actors. Stage 4) Experience and anchor – the prototype is shown at the LIGNA trade fair in Hannover, with backcasting from the future to the present.
