Flexible circuit boards for LED

Reference number
Coordinator DP Patterning AB - Norrköping
Funding from Vinnova SEK 966 000
Project duration May 2016 - July 2017
Status Completed

Purpose and goal

The project aims to provide an understanding of the potential and needs of Flexible Circuit Board (FPCB) for the LED industry, and based on this understanding, further develop the technology to meet these needs. The result of the project is very good. Two different materials and processes for these have been developed in the project. The goal of introducing new FPCB for the LED market has been met, but our analysis is that it will take a few years before the FPCB is dominant in this market, as the LED industry today is based on rigid boards, DPP technology can shorten this time.

Expected results and effects

The result of the project is very good with increased understanding of the requirements of the LED industry as well as new materials and processes. Expected effects of this are that this will reduce the threshold for the LED industry to accept DPP technology. Thanks to the good technical results, the project results have already been used in other markets, which generated completely new business opportunities. The increased sales provide an opportunity to establish new production facilities in Norrköping with an increased recruitment requirement.

Planned approach and implementation

The project started with a survey of the needs of the LED industry through contact with an international player. The survey gave a specification for the products be manufactured with the Process. However, the survey is not complete and will continue after the end of the project. The cooperation with Swedish industry and academia during the project was very rewarding and has created a lot of knowledge in the company as well as many future partners. Work with the international actors was more challenging and demanded more resources than expected.

The project description has been provided by the project members themselves and the text has not been looked at by our editors.
