Purpose and goal
The project focused on improving the exploration criteria for polymetallic sulphide ores (Zn-Pb-Ag) and industrial mineral deposits (calcite and dolomite), both of which are associated with marble units. The ores at Sala have been reinterpreted as zinc skarn ores. The structure and stratigraphy of the entire Sala inlier has been re-evaluated, with increased exploration potential as a result.
Expected results and effects
The project´s results have stimulated a record high exploration interest in Salastråket. The new models have provided new tools and target areas, which can lead to the discovery of new mineral deposits. The results allow the detection of so-called ´ore haloes´ at a distance of several 100 meters from sulphide mineralization, and indicate potential at depths west of the historic mines at Sala. The project has also demonstrated industrial carbonate potential in the country rock to Garpenberg ore, which has led to an interest in the extraction of carbonates as a by-product.
Planned approach and implementation
The detailed mapping and sampling campaigns carried out during the project have led to a unique dataset, which is in the process of being published to benefit further work in the field. This consists of hundreds of lithogeochemical, isotope geochemical and mineralochemical analyzes, in addition to map material. A 3D model of the Sala silver mine that was produced will be used in the Sala silver mine´s museum exhibition. With the help of modern augmented reality technology, we will use the model to popularize project results, as well as convey the importance of mining to visitors.
