Important results from the project
This study evaluates the replacement of the cold plate with Uni.T within Volvo battery pack to eliminate direct contact between the cells and the coolant.
The study demonstrated that Uni.T, effectively maintains the battery pack within the required temperature limits across all evaluated configurations. Both double-sided and bottom cooling configurations results indicate that Uni.T provides efficient heat transfer performance, eliminating the need for leak detection systems.
Expected long term effects
The results indicate that Uni.T provides efficient heat transfer performance, eliminating the need for leak detection systems. By removing the direct contact between the coolant and the cells, Uni. increases safety and reduces the risk of fluid leakage, making it an excellent solution for thermal management in battery packs.
Approach and implementation
Detailed customized & mechanical designs of the Uni.T were drawn and priced. Building the component and testing it in a real application will enable validation of the thermal and mechanical performance. further design optimization is possible to further reduce weight and cost. A lifetime analysis shows that the proposed solution is easy to recycle and integrate into the current Volvo factory because it consists only of standard metal without any chemicals.
