Important results from the project
The purpose of the preliminary study has been to lay the groundwork for a collaborative project between the pulp and paper industry, the mineral industry and technology suppliers to test and evaluate electric plasma calcination in a pilot project. Within the framework of the study, we have developed a first version for process design for the plasma technology. The design is specially developed for heat treatment of dry mineral powders and is generic in nature, which means that it could also be used for example in the cement industry.
Expected long term effects
The next step will be fund raising for building an experimental pilot process at ScanArc in Hofors. They have substantial knowledge about plasma technology and a well-equipped test hall. Further test and developing new measurement technology such as penetrating radar in combination with LIBS is necessary. The Sabatiér process has the potential to convert the concentrated carbon dioxide to methane. It is recommended that a system study of the pulp mill´s energy balance is performed to investigate if the Sabation process can enable the pulp mill to produce products from black liquor.
Approach and implementation
The plan has worked well and we have largely followed the project plan. The project were organized in a project group with participants from Carnot, FindIT, Scanarc and ÅF, as well as an extended reference group with representatives from AGA, SMA Mineral and Stora Enso Skoghall. The members of the project group have primarily worked independently but with contacts when needed as well as follow-up telephone meetings held at approximately 3-4 weeks intervals. The reference group has met on three occasions and visited the facilities at ScanArc in Hofors, Stora Enso and SMA Mineral in Rättvik
