Project duration January 2020 - July 2022
Status Completed
Venture Challenge-driven innovation - Phase 2 Collaboration

Purpose and goal

The purpose of the project was to collect the development and usage of electric aircrafts in Sweden. The project resulted in a design for a 19-seater regional aircraft (ES-19) with a fully electric drivetrain. With a high performing aerodynamic design and efficient electric drivetrain, the ES-19 is the most economic and environmentally friendly aircraft of date. Two demonstrators were made, one for a full size electric drivetrain, and one scale flying scale model for aerodynamic verification.

Expected results and effects

The effects of the projects have been big. The results have attracted aerospace engineers from around the world to come and work in Gothenburg. At the start of the project, Heart Aerospace had two employees. The company now has over 140 full time employees who are working on the industrialization of the results from ELISE Step 2. The results have also been the basis for large investments in Swedish aerospace, granting Heart Aerospace a 72-million-dollar investment, along with an order for 200 aircraft from United and Mesa Airlines, with market interest for over 500 aircraft.

Planned approach and implementation

The focus in the project was to produce tangible results. The work packages were focused on real market studies, aircraft design, electric drivetrain development, this focus has generated clear deliverables that can be built upon in future projects, as well as act as input to inhouse development of an electric aircraft. During the project, the coordinator left the project, and Heart Aerospace took over project ownership. In future projects, it is essential to have full dedication and understanding of the project expectations from all parties involved.
