Important results from the project
The architectural innovation project The Elastic Home aims to offer new more elastic forms of housing based on community, increased local sharing and can change and adapt to the needs of both the individual and society. The project intend to increase access to resources and services but at the same time reduce resource consumption and cost through increased sharing. The goal is benefits for the individual and society through reduced impact on the environment and increased health, security and equality. For housing companies the value will be more stable areas and lower management costs.
Expected long term effects
The Elastic Home has engaged many actors and created an understanding of concrete opportunities for more resource-efficient housing with increased sharing and community. A "toolbox" has been developed to enable and support spatial, social, digital and economic dimensions of the new form of housing. The project has also identified opportunities and obstacles within the current regulations for introducing more sharing and community in housing. The work has shown that it is possible to increase the elasticity within the existing system in several ways and to varying degrees.
Approach and implementation
The project has focused on facilitating innovative knowledge exchange between 28 organizations that represent the housing sector as a system. Knowledge gathering, needs analyzes, future scenarios and creative dialogues have formed the basis for the work. Three architectural prototypes for three different housing companies have been developed in collaboration with experts in sustainability, community, health, planning and digitization. These, in turn, are the basis for more general and implementable strategies for elastic housing gathered in a toolbox.
