Important results from the project

Beyond5 is an European project that includes all parts of the semiconductor system value chain. Lund University has participated as a partner, responsible for digital baseband processing for a MIMO system at 39GHz for communication inside aircraft. The project has led both to new and to deepening of existing collaborations. The knowledge developed in the project has given and will give both synergy effects with other research projects and improved education in this area.

Expected long term effects

The success of Swedish industry is increasingly dependent on good knowledge in the development of semiconductor systems. This project has improved cooperation between industry and academia in the area, and has given academic researchers a better overview of the entire value chain, from semiconductor materials to application systems. Both of these will contribute to the future competence supply and success of Swedish industry, through improved research collaborations and educational programs.

Approach and implementation

The specific sub-project carried out by Lund University consisted of implementing digital processing, adapted to the specification and to the analog hardware that has been developed by other parties. Some delays occurred due to the advanced heterogeneous integration of multiple analog chips, antennas, and the digital part. However, the team managed to deliver the functionality planned for the digital parts and a scaled-down integration could be realized.
