Important results from the project
Within the "InBAT sensing" project we have further developed Insplorion´s battery sensor, together with our partner AMTE Power (formerly AGM batteries), through both technical and market development. The goal of the project was to reach TRL 7-8 and to produce a battery pack equipped with InBAT sensors, and a battery monitoring system, for use in tests with potential customers. Due to technical difficulties, we have not been able to reach this objective. Instead, we have focused on producing a battery module with InBAT sensors and correlating the data with electrochemical parameters.
Expected long term effects
Within the project, a method for reproducibly integrating the sensors into battery cells has been developed and the sensor´s influence on cell performance has been investigated. A circuit board with optical components has been produced and used to read the sensor probe. The circuit board is so small that it can be integrated into a battery pack. A battery module with InBAT sensors has been produced and the data obtained can be used in customer dialogues, for example when selling the research and development instrument M8, which in itself is also an outcome of the project.
Approach and implementation
The project has been a collaboration between Insplorion and AMTE Power. Insplorion has been responsible for the development of the InBAT sensor and lab tests, while AMTE Power has been responsible for integrating and testing the sensor in commercial cells. The collaboration has been going well but the project has suffered major delays and complications due to COVID-19 and the restrictions that have been in place for everything in the UK where AMTE has its manufacturing and offices.
