Important results from the project
Passiv Systems and NODA Intelligent Systems have different, but complementary, innovative solutions for working with energy efficiency in district heating networks and for identifying improvement opportunities without affecting end-user comfort. The purpose of SMOOTH has been to coordinate the development of these systems in order to reach a wider section of the English market. The solution has been demonstrated in Harrods Village, London, and further work to commercialize the system is ongoing.
Expected long term effects
The results of SMOOTH show the potential of linking apartment-based heating with active demand side managment and other operational system efficiency in production and distribution. Apartment-based heating through Heat Interface Units is very common in England. Within the project, we have demonstrated that it is possible to link this concept with operational demand side management in district heating substations as well as optimization of supply temperature from production units within the heat network.
Approach and implementation
The project has been based on three horizontal tracks in technology, demonstration and market development. Technology development has focused on coordinating communication and functionality between the Passive and NODA system. The work with the demonstration plant has been aimed at verifying the technology in an operational environment. The results from technology and demonstration have then formed a basis for the market development within the project. Passiv Systems has been project manager, and the ongoing work has been shared between NODA and Passive.
