Important results from the project
The objective of the project was to develop a unique, dissolvable microcarrier and associated bioprocess platform for industrial scale. Several prototype microcarriers were successfully developed and new methods for analyzing the degree of functionalization and chemical residual products contributed to increased understanding and control of the interactions between MCS microsphere and DNM coating technology. It remains to optimize the microcarriers for cultivation of mesenchymal stem cells.
Expected long term effects
An increased knowledge in Maglechemoswed microsphere technology with the possibility of connecting different functional groups to the microspheres opens endless possibilities for the development of new medical devices and pharmacological products. Several projects have already been initiated and pre-clinical studies have been carried out. The new analysis methods will make continued development work more specific and better predict interactions with cells/tissue.
Approach and implementation
The first half of the project went according to plan. All project parties contributed with their parts and milestones were met. During the second half of the project, cell culture with the developed prototypes showed unexpected toxic effects on MSCs. More time than planned was spent testing several prototypes with different concentrations, variations and methods. This meant that we did not achieve the project´s final objective. The cooperation with the other project partners has worked well.
