Purpose and goal

SPEC-NEURO aims to make monitoring of brain pressure (intracranial pressure, ICP) and sleep disorders safe, non-invasive and available to more patients. Today ICP is measured with a catheter inserted through the skull, and sleep studies often require a night in a sleep lab with many wired sensors. The project develops and validates a wireless sensor based on low-power microwaves combined with AI, up to a tested prototype ready for the regulatory approval process.

Expected effects and result

The project is expected to deliver a validated prototype system: a sensor device, a single-use skin patch and a secure digital service that presents results to healthcare staff. It will be tested on physical models and evaluated on clinical data against today´s methods. In the longer term this can mean earlier diagnosis, fewer invasive procedures and catheter-related infections, sleep studies at home instead of in a lab, monitoring for patients excluded today, and lower healthcare costs.

Planned approach and implementation

The work proceeds in stages. The sensor and measurement methods are first developed and tested on physical models that mimic the head. AI that combines physical knowledge with machine learning is then trained to interpret the signals, and the system is evaluated on clinical data against today´s reference methods, with balanced representation of women and men. Regulatory documentation is built in parallel, and go/no-go decision points between stages ensure each step meets set criteria.
