Purpose and goal

The goal of this project was to develop and verify an IT-platform to support manufacturing industry in implementing Service-Based Business Models (SBBM) in the context of Circular Manufacturing Systems (CMS). The goal of the project has been achieved through three unique developments, an IT platform, a prototype of smart washing machine and an IoT platform. All these developments work simultaneously in collecting, processing and sharing data in real time and thereby, enable implementation of SBBM.

Expected results and effects

The project has resulted in development of an IT platform, a prototype of smart washing machine and an IoT platform. Furthermore, a knowledgebase that is necessary to develop ICT infrastructure and implement that to enable CMS has been created. The IT platform is ready for commercial launce. Mass production of the smart washing machines and a large scale pilot implementation of SBBM is planned to be starting in 2020. The IoT platform with machine learning module is to be tested for commercial feasibility in the pilot project.

Planned approach and implementation

The project was a collaboration between KTH Royal Institute of Technology KTH, Gorenje d.d., PDS Vision (former Simonsoft UK Ltd) and Signifikant Svenska AB. The consortium was formed with expertise needed for the success of the project. KTH provided R&D support for the developments. Gorenje developed the hardware and software for the prototype smart washing machine. PDS Vision developed the IoT platform with machine learning module for predictive maintenance. Signifikant developed the IT platform to connect machines with the value chain actors
