Purpose and goal

The purpose of DOMINANT is to reduce a critical vulnerability in defence-sector supply chains by developing Swedish-owned protective coatings for space and defence propulsion components. The aim is to enable advanced existing alloys to replace today’s material solutions while withstanding extreme temperatures, corrosive combustion environments and rapid thermal cycling. The project will also lay the foundation for a robust, qualified and industrially scalable Swedish coating capability.

Expected effects and result

DOMINANT is expected to deliver validated protective coatings that enable advanced alloys to withstand extreme temperatures, corrosive combustion environments and rapid thermal cycling. The results will reduce dependence on critical materials, strengthen supply-chain resilience and establish a scalable Swedish coating capability. Long-term effects include improved defence readiness, industrial competitiveness and more secure European space and defence supply chains.

Planned approach and implementation

DOMINANT will be implemented through close collaboration between TerraBarrier, LTU and ECAPS. TerraBarrier will develop and scale the coating processes at its Karlstad facility. LTU will perform material characterization and testing under relevant high-temperature and corrosive conditions, while ECAPS will evaluate the coatings in propulsion applications. Results will be reviewed against defined technical milestones to guide optimization and industrial validation.
