Important results from the project

Our vision is to be a recognized research center that contributes with leading research on industrially relevant questions regarding the design and characterization of patient-friendly biological drug products. The research supports a mechanistic understanding of factors that lead to better stability of biologics in formulated products. A hub for the development of biological drugs will be created. In collaboration with external partners, needs are identified and business models developed. Training of researchers and students contributes to Sweden´s competitiveness.

Expected long term effects

The project has created a detailed picture of how proteins interact in solution. Effects of excipients in solution and in solid phase on protein structure have begun to be elucidated. From these results new formulations can be designed, and effects on stability verified by several advanced methods. New oral and topical delivery formulation platforms have shown positive results in-vitro. Methods and knowledge about large research infrastructures are created and disseminated to actors within applied research. Sweden is regarded as an important arena for biological drugs.

Approach and implementation

The project is run in work packages (WP) which are coordinated to provide synergy effects. Four WPs focus on research and run several sub-projects. All WPs include all types of partners who actively participate in the sub-projects. This provides dedicated partners and faster progress, and contributes to research relevant to industrial issues. This also enables innovations to be captured efficiently. Education, innovation and communication are parts that are run in collaboration with other WP. Frequent meetings create a platform for new collaborations.
