Destruction of PFOS

Reference number
Coordinator GiertzTech Aktiebolag - GiertzTech AB
Funding from Vinnova SEK 300 000
Project duration December 2013 - June 2014
Status Completed

Purpose and goal

The purpose of the projekt was to make a profitability model and to verify a method for destruction of PFOS using electromagnetic processes. Both have been fulfilled.

Results and expected effects

Inventory of PFOS pollution in Sweden has been performed. The results show PFOS contamination in lakes Mälaren, Vättern and Vänern, as well as the Baltic sea in Hanöbukten. The majority of these PFOS contaminations are probably caused by an older type of flame retardent which also contains PCB and a brominated flame retardent. Hence, there is a good business potential for large scale destruction of PFOS (and also PCB). A model contract for joint ventures has been made. A method for large scale destruction of PFOS has been verified i laboratory.

Approach and implementation

Water samples of lake water, Baltic sea water and tap water have been collected from major lakes and cities in Sweden. In many cases samples of polluted earth have been included. These samples have been analysed using a method developed by GiertzTech AB and in many cases also by certified institutes. Samples with known PFOS content have been exposed to electromagnetic energy which destroys the PFOS molecules. These samples have subsequently been sent for analyse to a certified institute.
