Purpose and goal

The incidence of cancer increases globally and in the next two decades an increase of more than 50% in the number of new cancer cases is expected. Through improved access to radiotherapy, especially in emerging markets, and with more efficient treatments, more patients can be helped. The overall objective of the project is to use data-driven methods to improve and simplify the workflow for radiotherapy planning, with a focus on stereotactic radiosurgery.

Expected effects and result

The result of the project is expected to be a more autonomous and intuitive workflow, which would imply faster treatment planning. In addition, is the variability between treatment plans from different clinics expected to decrease. Furthermore, would the planning become less dependent on the individual and free up time for the decision-maker, which would enable better treatment for more patients.

Planned approach and implementation

The activities in the project are structured in three work packages that will be carried out jointly. We wish for a close collaboration between the academic researchers and the domain experts, and in order to achieve that, and to promote knowledge exchange, the postdoctoral researchers within the project are supposed to work from the Elekta office on a regular basis. In addition, we will have regular project meetings.

The project description has been provided by the project members themselves and the text has not been looked at by our editors.
