Important results from the project
The aim of the pre-study was to gather information and knowledge in order to make a thorough project plan for the development of a tool-box with methods to evaluate stability in aerosol spray paints in the early development stage. During the pre-study three potential method or tools were identified. These will be evaluated with further testing during the coming project. The methods will be used to test product stability for water based spray paints to identify viable candidates in the early development phase.
Expected long term effects
During the pre-study several potential methods has been identified. During the planning of the pre-study the focus was mainly on developing methods based on the SAD-concept. Results from preliminary testing showed that the application of the concept on the chosen paint system was too complicated. Thus, the system was evaluated with other methods to determine emulsion stability. The methods will be further evaluated in the main project to determine how they affect different systems and how the emulsion stability correlates with expected shelf-life of a product.
Approach and implementation
In the beginning of the pre-study developers from Aerosol attended a course in the SAD-concept at SP. After which Aerosol and SP collaborated to evaluate the SAD-concept in order to replace organic solvents with water in aerosol spray paints. The SAD-concept showed to be too complicated in the chosen paint system, SP and Aerosol started to evaluate other methods. The evaluated methods were to accelerate instability in emulsions or to create a lab setup where the propellant DME was replaced with a liquid solvent in an open container.
