Cost estimate of the floating wind turbine SeaTwirl

Reference number
Coordinator SEATWIRL AB
Funding from Vinnova SEK 500 000
Project duration June 2015 - January 2016
Status Completed

Purpose and goal

The goal was to obtain a good estimate for the cost of a full-scale SeaTwirl. The goal is met. We have developed an economic calculation LCOE (Levelised cost of energy) for a full-scale SeaTwirl floating wind turbine.

Expected results and effects

Direct result is that we can point to how and why SeaTwirl is a cost-effective power plants produce renewable energy. The effect of this may very well be that it is easier to attract capital. Indirect result is that several contacts with suppliers and partners for the forthcoming prototypes have been established. And that we have a tool, financial calculations, which will be able to guide the technical development in order to achieve the most cost-effective product as possible.

Planned approach and implementation

The project was conducted by first underpin our analysis with the data and knowledge in the following steps: - Presumed an installation process for future installation of a full-scale SeaTwirl. - Performed initial measurements on Lysekil prototype and build knowledge about the performance of the full-scale SeaTwirl. - Conducted a pre-study on the turbine and the floating body in which we examined the materials/construction for a full-scale SeaTwirl. - Compiled all the steps above in an economic calculation LCOE (Levelised cost of energy) for a full-scale SeaTwirl.
