Important results from the project
The goal was to use bacteria to fix small cracks in concrete. We have screened a strain collection and found some organisms cpable of prodcueing calcium carbonate crystals. these crystals are filling up the space in the cracks and ´glue´ the walls together. We have started practical tests togehter with the private sector. A rich network has been sestablished with actors in the concrete business area.
Expected long term effects
Some very good strains have been isolated. We have established good ability to form suitable crystals of calcium carbonate. The practical experiemtns that have started are not redy for evaluation. Time was too short. The companies we collaborate with are very positive and optimistic about the potential.
Approach and implementation
Initially screening of the strain collection. Cultivation of organisms with promising properties. Characterization of crystals in culture vessels. Practical experiments carried out jointly with the sector. the healing is underway.
