Important results from the project

The aim has been to create a more profound understanding of the interaction between different actors in urban innovation systems, specifically focusing on roles, responsibilities, and structures. The project has fulfilled the 3 goals: -Present a knowledge overview of previous studies of Gothenburg’s innovation system. -Create a current map of key actors’ experiences challenges and opportunities in the innovation system -Explore future needs of knowledge creation around “urban innovation governance”.

Expected long term effects

The findings show a multifaceted reality in urban innovation systems indicating a need of diversified support for different types of cities, developing innovation policy in dialogue with concerned parties, the importance of long-term perspectives as well as strategic framing and development of innovation management competence at the local level, described in the Vinnova report “Samverkan i urbana innovationssystem”. Recommendations targeting different actors to increase their competence and knowledge have been outlined to support future work in urban innovation systems.

Approach and implementation

The project has had a qualitative research approach and was executed in 4 parts; 1) Literature studies, 2) Interview study with local actors in Gothenburg, 3) Focused interview study with national authorities and 4) Synthesis & dialogue. 2 seminars with invited participants have been organized to discuss analysis and findings. Several dialogue seminars have also been held with Vinnova-employees as a part of their ongoing internal strategy work. The work has to some extent been impacted by Corona restrictions, but overall, the project has delivered according to the initial goals.
