Purpose and goal

City as a Platform has brought together 18 municipalities with the aim of exploring, implementing and collaborating on a common framework for IoT platforms as support for societal benefits in the cities. The project has identified the technical & organizational capabilities needed for the municipalities to be able to make data available in a controlled and scalable way. The goal of the project has been that it should be easy to share data within a city and that it should be easy to move data-driven services between the municipalities - the same principle as for a smartphone.

Expected results and effects

The project has generated a broad interest in the area and a spread of the project´s aims and objective as well as an understanding of the value of working standardized and collaborative around data management and data-driven innovation. It includes components of the “soft digital infrastructure” which is underdeveloped at a national level and needs to be addressed vigorously in the future. We believe that the project has contributed to significant progress in the area in many municipalities (not just project partners) and among key national stakeholders.

Planned approach and implementation

The project has been carried out through three mutually dependent types of activities: Proof-of-concepts with more cities together, an arena for experience exchange and where we together highlighted missing components of the soft infrastructure, and national & international impact on further development and management of these components and also the importance of working with an open platform perspective. This helped to understand the municipalities´ needs and difficulties from different perspectives at the same time: Practical, technical, organizational and strategic.
