Important results from the project

PHOENIX is to build and demonstrate a set of comprehensive chemical recycling solutions for recirculation of carbon bound in polymer-based materials. These solutions will demonstrate recycling of real, currently available polymer-based waste streams at industrial scale and in operational environment, integrated into existing business ecosystem. Pyrolysis, HTL and solvolysis are included in PHOENIX demonstrations to cover a broad range of waste polymer flows, including contaminated plastic packaging, PPE-items, mixed polymers, rubber and tires, composites, etc.

Expected long term effects

PHOENIX´s local circularity hubs integrated into existing business ecosystem will include also a state-of-the-art learning community concept built around a demonstrator to accelerate the uptake of insights, knowledge sharing and innovation capacity. With its feasible, replicable and scalable local circularity hubs PHOENIX will contribute to bringing the development of chemical recycling to a new level, which will support a modern, sustainable plastics industry fitting into a circular economy, and help to achieve the EU plastics strategy goals.

Approach and implementation

The project has been carried out according to plan and with slightly lower costs than expected. RagnSells replaced Swedish Plastic Recycling because in the final project concept, the Swedish local circular hub is built around tire recycling. Good contacts and cooperation with many leading Europen companies in the area of chemical recycling has been established in the course of the project.
