Important results from the project

The project’s aim was to design and manufacture prototype hardware that demonstrates key technologies and their benefits for a compact Head Up Display (C-HUD). The goal of integrating and evaluating a full system laboratory demonstrator compared to jointly agreed criteria was not reached when the project was stopped after its first phase of three. During the first phase of the project, the sub-goal was reached, to develop an optical system model with the requirement to fit in the limited cockpit of business jet and at the same time fulfil the requirements on optical performance.

Expected long term effects

During the project, Saab AB made an overall strategic investment decision that does not enable further investments in certain product areas, of which Head-Up Displays was one of these. The expected effects of the project will therefore not be utilized by Saab which was the basis for the decision to terminate the project prematurely. The results from the first phase of the project include increased knowledge of the limitations that have the greatest impact on design of a compact HUD and its optical components and will be a good starting point for continued product development at a later time.

Approach and implementation

The project was carried out in close collaboration between Saab and Qioptiq. The start was delayed by difficulties in agreeing on the collaboration agreement. The project plan with three phases - optical design, sample manufacturing, evaluation of demonstrator fits well with the project aim and established procedures. The project, managed by Saab, started at a kick-off. Covid-19 has since prevented physical meetings that would have improved cooperation that despite regular web meetings has not been as close as expected. The work was made quite individually at each project partner.
