Important results from the project
The project has clearly shown the possibility at pilot scale to increase the green content in coil coatings, regarding primers and backside coatings that is not directly exposed to sunlight and UV-light. There is a clear interest among the industrial partner to use these findings for future implementation but no further steps has been taken during the project time. The project has increased the knowledge concerning the use of chemical components based on furan chemistry such as FDCA as well as synthesis of biopolyesters.
Expected long term effects
The project produced at pilot scale a primer/backside coating with approximately 35% renewable carbons, a successful result and since initial tests for this products showed good properties there´s some expectations that this might lead to industrial implementation within years. Solving the low UV-resistance was more complicated than expected. The project has shown a UV-light degradation of the furan ring structure of the polyesters which has not earlier been found reported in literature.
Approach and implementation
The project has been constituted by a dynamic and competent group where the activities and knowledge have been shared. The industrial parties have clearly demonstrated a strong value chain with good validation of the aim of the project. Seven regular meetings and a number of extra special meetings have been held. At several occasions have these been held on site at the parties premises to increase the awareness of each business activities and increasing the group belonging as a result. In spite of reorganizations was a strong commitment recognized throughout the project.
