Coordinator KUNGLIGA TEKNISKA HÖGSKOLAN - ECE-skolan, KTH
Funding from Vinnova SEK 188 000
Project duration January 2016 - May 2016
Status Completed

Purpose and goal

The aim of the project has been to try a recently developed bibliometric method using citation-based clustering of articles to do an evaluation of Swedish research in mining and minerals. The method has shown potential, capturing 4 times the articles found in a previous keyword-based study, but has also exhibited some problems regarding the description of the content of publication classes and some uncertainty about the relevance of the articles and therefore needs to be further developed.

Results and expected effects

The goals of the project have been to test a citation-based clustering method to select publications for bibliometric analysis of a heterogeneous scientific field, but also to gain experiences to further develop the method. The goals have been fulfilled by publishing a printed report and statistical data at the website: http://kth.se/bibliometrics/projects/mine_and_minerals/ and the project has also gained valuable input to develop the method further.

Approach and implementation

Articles retrieved with the means of a keyword-based search were used as seed articles to identify clustering-based classes suitable for analysis. The contents of the classes were described using statistical extraction of relevant words and a selection of 243 relevant classes was made on the basis of the labelling of the classes and statistical data. The selected classes were then analysed with regard to publication volume and citation impact.
