Call Test beds for the challenges of society - preparation project 2020

Important results from the project

Robot automation has changed many sectors with improved work environment and increased efficiency as a result. We see potential for healthcare to make the same journey and move tedious, heavy and risky tasks to robots and automated solutions. The aim project was to investigate the automation industry´s interest in the healthcare sector and the potential of a test bed at Karolinska Universitetssjukhuset. This has been done through external monitoring, internal anchoring and business model development for the conditions for a test bed for automation in a hospital environment.

Expected long term effects

The project has investigated the knowledge base on whether a test bed is a possible way to increase the pace of implementation of automation in healthcare. The analysis has mapped the industry´s interest as well as the internal interest and need for Karolinska Universitetssjukhuset. The test bed scope has been delimited for the largest impact goals with a focus on market-ready solutions with TRL level 9. Several potential business models have been investigated. A plan for how the test bed could be operated has been developed together with vision and implementation.

Approach and implementation

A market analysis was done together with Uppsala University. The results show several obstacles with the market´s interest in cooperating with public care, especially the law on public procurement. Internal knowledge gathering at Karolinska Universitetssjukhuset has been collected, which has resulted in a system and needs analysis. In summary, there is a great commitment in healthcare and a desire to more easily test physical automation before procurement. A strategic analysis has been carried out which has developed several proposals for business models for operating a test bed.
