Important results from the project

The overall aim to propose how AR can be used as an aid for rock mechanics in underground mining is considered fulfilled since the sub-aims have been fulfilled. These aims were to (i) determine and define the data for visualization with AR technology (workshops), (ii) determine appropriate technology for AR and positioning underground (literature study and interviews), (iii) define the requirements for the computer-generated information that must be prepared for visualization with AR (literature study and numerical simulations), and (iv) present the results (conferences).

Expected long term effects

The results from this preliminary study shows that (i) there is an interest in using AR for rock mechanics in the mining industry, (ii) that quite a lot of relevant data is already collected, (iii) that the technology (AR unit and positioning) exists for AR use underground , and (iv) that results from numerical simulations can be visualized with AR. Overall, the prerequisites are considered to be good for a full-scale application, where several different areas of expertise should be included, to develop, test and implement AR as a tool in mining.

Approach and implementation

This preliminary study has been performed in accordance with the proposed plan, i.e. conducted a literature review, organized workshops with personnel at Swedish underground mines, interviewed people in the subject area, carried out simulations with numerical tools, and wrote conference papers that will be presented at an international conference and at a Swedish industry day.
