Purpose and goal
The purpose of the project is to perform the subsequent process steps to hot formed titanium parts of commercial interest to GKN Aerospace. The aim was to perform the subsequent processes mechanical cutting, wet blasting and etching by the SME according to the demands of the Aero engine industry and at the same time document the manufacturing processes in a so called FAIR - First Article Inspection Report. The project makes new steps possible towards offering a cluster of SME that can produce hot formed titanium components to GKN in Trollhättan.
Expected results and effects
The project has been proven very successful. The participating SME have performed the planned subsequent process steps on the batch of hot formed parts produced by Swerea IVF in cooperation with SMF in a previous SME Aerospace project. Quality documentation of every step of the process chain has been developed according to the requirements of the Aero engine industry and the results of the studied titanium part have been handed over to GKN. Evaluation of shape deviance and the effect from the subsequent process steps show that all components are within tolerance for production.
Planned approach and implementation
The project activities include studies of part tolerances and transferring demands of the Aerospace industry together with performance of the subsequent process steps to hot forming. Also, generation of quality documentation for the manufacturing process was included. The hot forming procedure has been made in collaboration with an on-going NFFP6 project in which FE-analyses, modification of forming tool and hot forming has been performed. The SME have individually performed the procces steps and participated in the quality work. A meeting is planned with GKN to discuss the FAIR.
