Important results from the project
The overall project goal was to demonstrate a technical solution for producing coated aluminium foils for energy storage devices. Using high-power impulse magnetron sputtering, a coating process in a roll-to-roll semi-industrial system was established. The process achieved excellent coating adhesion, and it was shown that the ductility of metallic coatings can be greatly improved through process optimization. The coated foils were tested in half-cell batteries with promising results.
Expected long term effects
The project opens new possibilities for the use of coated aluminium foils in energy storage devices. Such foils either replace other metals and provide a lighter and more cost-effective alternative, or deliver improved performance compared with uncoated aluminium. The deposition technology is also suitable for a wider range of coating materials, enabling future applications in other sectors.
Approach and implementation
The ALFE project was carried out in collaboration between industrial and academic partners. By combining expertise in thin-film technology, materials characterization, industrial production methods, with knowledge of the market, the project could be carried out according to plan. The resulting technology and new insights are valuable for development of future products.
