Purpose and goal
This planning grant supports the development of a project proposal for a Horizon Europe call 2025. The project focuses on designing microalgae cell factories for sustainable functional food production, aiming to develop an integrated biorefinery system using engineered microalgae with enhanced biomass composition to efficiently produce value-added products.
Expected effects and result
The project will develop advanced bioprocesses to fractionate engineered algal biomass and extract high-value biomolecules (proteins, peptides, polysaccharides, lipids, pigments) for use in functional foods. This enables sustainable, smart production systems and marks a breakthrough in biorefinery models through enhanced industrial algal cell factories with increased biomass content.
Planned approach and implementation
We already have a good concept for this project that will be fine tuned and agreed upon by the consortium partners in the main project. We also have tentative work packages and tasks that will be finalised by the consortium in the main project. There are 6 partners confirmed for the proposal; spread across Sweden, Ireland, Spain and Romania. These will be augmented by other relevant partners during the implementation of this planning project.
